FCCLA members never disappoint, especially when it comes to helping out others. One chapter in particular
seems to prove that point, the chapter from BCIT, whose community service projects truly give back to the people.

Over the past year, this amazing group of students and advisers has spent their time to help a former officer. The
child of that officer was diagnosed with VACTERL syndrome which causes birth defects, as she and her husband
have lost their home in trying to take care of the child. The BCIT chapter has joined together with other
organizations, including FBLA and Skills, to help one of their own get back on her feet and provide her with
opportunities for a better life. Through all of this though, BCIT's community service efforts did not stop.

BCIT has fervently supported the National Outreach Project, Feed the Children, as well as other Community
Service efforts including Amandla Crossing, Relay for Life, and Project Teach. One of their favorite events is the
annual holiday show that they hold at the Githens Center for disabled children which always seems to put a smile
on everyone's face. They also collect for the Ronald McDonald House to support the room that NJ FCCLA
furnishes and Alex's Lemonade Stand to help fight childhood cancer. While doing all of this, they strengthen their
seventy-member strong chapter and promote the purposes of FCCLA.

Even through all of this, the chapter has the time to create outstanding leaders who will make a difference in the
future. Just this past July, BCIT took twenty members to the National Leadership Meeting. The chapter has won
eleven gold medals and nine silver medals, one for each competitor in Illustrated Talk, Chapter Showcase
Manual, Fashion Design, Applied Technology, Interpersonal Communications, Entrepreneurship, and Interior
Design.   On January 21st the New Jersey Department of Education Recognized 12 FCCLA members from BCIT
for their outstanding participation in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.  (Click here to read an
    article regarding that.)

Yet what seems to make this chapter so impressive is the enthusiasm of both the members and the advisers,
Mrs. Barbara Brown and Mrs. Katina Lindsay, who continue to recruit members and find opportunities for the
chapter to shine. Their chapter has been affiliated since 1985, and over the years they have seen unbelievable
growth in their members' leadership skills through their participation in this organization. Mrs. Brown says "we
want every member to look back and say that FCCLA was the best experience of their lives" and she has done
so by "continuing to inspire our members to shoot for the stars in all that they do".

Ultimately, FCCLA plays a major role in the lives of its members from BCIT, as it truly is a life changer. This
chapter's hard work and dedication effects all parts of their community and truly needs to be recognized.
Congratulations to BCIT for a job well done!
